The Village. Wilmette was incorporated in 1872. The village is named in honor of Antoine Ouilmette, a French-Canadian fur trader.As of the 2000 census, Wilmette had a population of 27,651.

The Wilmette Historical Museum is dedicated to exploring, preserving, and sharing the lively history of Wilmette and its surroundings on the North Shore of Chicago.
