Riverside is a National Historic Landmark (since 1970). With its expansive green parkways, curvilinear streets, remarkable architecture, and gas-lit street lanterns there is plenty to explore and discover in the Village of Riverside.
Riverside was designed between 1868 and 1869 by the landscape architects Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux.. Riverside Illinois has long been considered the best example of Olmsted's idea of how suburbs should look. He designed streets that followed the curve of the land and eased the grade of the slopes to fit his plans. Finally, he avoided all uses of right angle intersections.
Riverside was officially incorporated as a municipality in 1875.
Today, Riverside remains a vibrant community. The significance of the landscape architecture of Riverside has been recognized at the national, state, and local levels. In 1970, Riverside was designated a National Historic Landmark, in recognition of its historic landscape architecture. The residents' and village leaders' interest in the study and documentation of Riverside has helped to preserve the original design.
