Riverside was designed between 1868 and 1869 by the landscape architects Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux.. He designed streets that followed the curve of the land and eased the grade of the slopes to fit his plans. Finally, he avoided all uses of right angle intersections.
Riverside was officially incorporated as a municipality in 1875.
