The Village of Northfield was first settled in the mid-1800s by Mary Young and her two daughters near present day Bracken Lane. When the settlers first arrived, Northfield was a remote swamp that included the present day Skokie Lagoons as well as the "Middle Fork" branch of the Chicago River.
Northfield was originally incorporated in 1926 as Wau-Bun. It was not until 1927 that the name of the Village had been changed to Northfield, As of the 2000 census, Northfield had a population of 5,389. While small in size, Northfield offers convenient access to downtown Chicago, while maintaining its small town charm on Chicago’s North side.
